My only problem with magic combat is range. Your average spell range that really reaches out to touch someone is about 1,000 feet. The average CS laser rifle range is 2,000 feet. A S.A.M.A.S. flying at cruising speed of 150 mph flies 3,300 feet in 15 seconds. It's not looking good for the mages. It takes higher levels to cast powerful spells at a distance, but any brand new grunt can start picking off casters right out of the gate. And power armor users are going to zoom in and out faster than they can be targeted.
I guess that's why it feels so much better when a Ley Line Walker can take down a squad of fly boys and live to tell the tale.
