Traditional australian boomerangs were designed to:
A: fly with a slight curve
And B: break an animals leg into two parts.

Edit: why is this such a popular comment. I dont even think its that good.

Supposedly returning boomerangs were used to hunt birds flying in a flock. Maybe?

Ok as an Australian I can explain. Returning boomerangs are novelty items and mainly a tourist thing. It’s gimmicky and it makes you think of Australia. Proper boomerangs don’t actually come back and are sorta just curved sticks you fling and bonk people with. Understandable mistake though

I think the biggest problem is that once you hit something there no way the boomerang actually returns

I was told by an indigenous man that boomerangs are good for hunting birds from the air since they can hit the bird and then pin in on the ground underneath its curve. Idk how much skill it'd take to do that but that's what he reckoned 😂

I always assumed they were meant to return if you missed the animal you were intending to kill so that in the event of a miss you don't have to walk as far to retrieve it.

Tbh, the only way to make it work as a weapon is if it's a metal with blades on the ends in a form of a boomerang
Or a boomerang with a granade on the end

So if they’re flying really fast and really left, they could technically be classified as a nascar stock car?

Yeah there was two different boomerangs. Returning boomerangs to herd animals and direct them into others hunters, not to hit them.
Then there was the ones meant to hit, they were more like clubs and were meant to be thrown at the legs or wings of animals to break them to be finished off by other hunters.

I thought it was the opposite way, a boomerang you aim to hit someone with isn't meant to return 😂

That’s probably why Batman throws his batarangs to the right in the Arkham games

i think you’re looking at this entirely wrong. they were absolutely meant to hit things. but IF YOU MISS… you get another shot.. and aiming to the right to hit something on the left isn’t that hard with practice.
