83 years ago on June 7th, 1942, the Battle of Midway ended. Just 6 months after the shocking attack on Pearl Harbor, Japan had conquered the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, the Dutch East Indies, and Burma. Now they were planning a decisive blow against the U.S. Fleet at Midway. However, American cryptographers had broken Japan’s code, allowing them to crucially predict the attack. Armed with this intelligence, Admiral Chester Nimitz sent a fleet with 3 aircraft carriers. On June 4th, the Japanese Navy launched aircraft to attack the American defenses on Midway. And although they were outnumbered, the U.S. Navy struck back. Dozens of dive bombers and torpedo planes pounded the Japanese aircraft carriers. Although the Americans took massive casualties, Japan's aircraft carriers Akagi, Kaga, and Soryu were engulfed in flames and sinking. Although the Japanese strike back and manage to sink the carrier USS Yorktown, their last carrier, Hiryu, is also destroyed. Forcing Admiral Yamamoto to abandon the battle. In just a few days, the U.S. changed the Pacific theater, destroying 4 carriers, 1 heavy cruiser, over 300 aircraft, and 3,000 soldiers.

I had 2 uncles that were radio men on planes. They came back and found their carrier was no more. They never mentioned anything to do with their experience. I didn't see the need. Why make them relive a war with stories that they would rather forget. Most Americans are clueless about how wars affect people.
