The song “APT.” is a romanized abbreviation of the Korean word "아파트," pronounced "apateu," which means "apartment." This is also the name of a well-loved Korean drinking game, often played among friends in Korean apartments. Rosé, in an interview with Vogue, explained that the song's idea came from a casual night in the studio. She was sharing Korean drinking culture with her collaborators and decided to teach them the "APT" game.
In the game, players chant "apateu" while placing their hands in the center of a circle. Someone then calls out a number, and as they count, everyone takes turns placing their hand on top. The last person to place their hand on top has to take a shot. This fun and social activity sparked the theme of the song.
After playing the game, Rosé and Bruno Mars began working on the song. Initially, she was unsure about writing a track inspired by a drinking game, questioning if it might seem “too unserious.” But as excitement for the song grew, she felt confident in completing it with Bruno and her production team, crafting it into a unique and catchy piece.
