Born Frank Uwe Laysiepen in Solingen, Germany, Ulay was a groundbreaking performance artist whose work frequently focused on the human body, identity, and the relationship between the self and others. He is perhaps best known for his intense collaborations with fellow performance artist Marina Abramović, with whom he explored themes of intimacy, trust, and endurance in their boundary-pushing performances.

One of Ulay’s most famous works with Abramović, The Lovers (1988), involved the two artists walking from opposite ends of the Great Wall of China to meet in the middle, symbolizing the end of their professional and personal relationship. Ulay’s solo work also delved deeply into issues of identity, often involving extreme physical acts that tested the limits of his own body.
