Everyone saw her as a manipulative selfish person but Stefan actually saw past that and understood why she did what she did. He feel sympathy for her.
On the other hand Katherine also helped Stefan overcome his fear of loosing elena. How she explained it to him and executed it was amazing.
She deserved a redemption arc and to end up with stefan. They deserved each other.

If you think about it we are all broken in this world "Is anyone truly good or evil" Katerina Petrova Pierce was broken, used, betrayed, never felt welcome anywhere, always on the run,
What that does to someone after so many years, she sought the only way that was less painful, she wanted to survive, she was done been one of the good ones. She became cold, a wench, a manipulator and a very twisted arc villain. I know her actions aren't justifiable but just because one can handle pain another should, everyone deals with emotions differently

I keep thinking about her trauma. I hate how show treated her later making her the villainest of the villains. Life is not black and white at all. She was broken and did bad things but she wasn't evil. She deserved her happy ending not less than other gray characters such as Damon for example
