Head movement is so underrated. In mma you dont see it quite as much and in thai fights you dont see it at all. Head movement can make you susceptible to kicks but in the majority of fights fist are your biggest concern. Blocking with your hands and arms can help but they wont reduce the power of the punch by much. You gotta be catching ounches in the chamber if you want to avoid damage but thats dangrous. Head movement is for moving away from contact making some punches glance off and easier to reduce the impact of solid contact by you moving the same direction as the punch. You can also throw off people's timing making them miss all together. Head movement is something you should practice as a fundamental skill if you want to spar. It also lets you set up counter punches but thats once you start getting a feel for people's rhythm. In higher levels of fighting sports training to change your timings on your head movement and footwork is essential but it all still comes back to the basics to be built on.
