I think baofeng is good for just getting into it. They have their place, they won't replace a top of the line digital Motorola but they aren't meant to.

Let's see...
Less than $100 compared to closer to $1000...
Affordability plays a large part no matter how much truth that you inject

Baofengs are great for a beater ht. Stolen? Don’t care. Water damage? Don’t care. Left it buried on top of a mountain? 😉

I see with a large budget this makes sense...But right now have my whole family prepped with radios with my 15$ unlocked Baofengs and a multi charger for the price of 1 used locked Moto. I could have bought a Daniel Defense for myself, or my whole family can have Glocks and I can have a Glock and Palmetto State AR. If I make more money I might change my mind. But food isn't cheap right now, and 5 people with bang sticks are better than 1 man with a awesome bang stick(unless the movies).

Baofengs aren't bad they just dont have all the bells and whistles. Ok for general use though

Actually you can send text messages radio to radio via baofenge audio interface cable with PTT control, from a laptop running FSQ0 which is free software. FSQ0 is also an option on FLDIGI open source software. Also, you can adapt the radios antenna to an external antenna either a mag mount on your vehicle or a commercial or homemade VHF antenna, which will really extend your range.

Upgraded my work (Paramedic) radio to a dual band APX7000 U/V. Have a few spare 7550s sitting around. I'm going to have to check out this software and hook it up with my radio at the house.

I DO invest in radios the same way I do in guns!
Off the books, no license, no registration, no paper trail, back alley transactions, buy 80% complete parts, make my own pirate gear OFF THE GRID!! 🏴‍☠

Well, in the end it's all about protecting your family and getting information over the air. I have the baofuen and it's serves my purpose for a low power/local com; house to house or car to car.

Be careful about the antennas on those. When I worked in an LMR shop, almost all the XPR 3000, 5000, and 7000 series radios that came in were because the antenna mount got broken off of the board. Usually we could solder it back on, but sometimes the board was broken too. Not sure if it was our customers abusing the radios, or a design flaw. Could be either, some of Motorola's design decisions can be questionable, and I lost count of the times that we'd get a radio in with the note "not working" only to find out that they'd run over it with a logging truck or dropped it in the harbor.

I baught a pair of professional walkies and about 6 pair of cheap walkies. Just incase shtf and cell phones don't work. I can pass out the cheap ones to neighbors and we can alert each other danger or what ever. Definitely a good investment

Baofengs are Hi Points of radio. Yeah, they work. Mostly. But you can do better, and if you take comms seriously, you should.

If you just want a wireless toy or treat comms as a convenience and not a necessity- go nuts, you aren't wasting money. Just recognize and respect the limits of the tech.

I’ve tried every single radio on the market and still go back to the 5R. I was assistant to the manager at radio shack for almost 2 years so obviously i know my stuff.

If the day comes i have to ditch a feng in a hurry so be it. Remember back in the day with ammo. Buy it cheap, stack it deep.

I have an XPR 7550 UHF portable and XPR 4550 UHF mobile. Got programming software up and running for amateur and GMRS but have not played with DMR or messaging yet. Can’t wait to see more! Thank you.

I really appreciate the amount and quality of information you put out in this space. It's something I'm really interested in but I don't have the headroom to go after it like you do. Very excited for what's coming up, thank you.

Baofeng is great for someone learning how radios work and getting easy hands-on, but this is what everyone should work towards and beyond.
