In the movies Metropolis is New York and Gotham is Newark. But in the comics Gotham is more of a Chicago/Detroit.

I think a lot of people have the misconception that Gotham and Metropolis occupy the same space as an existing city. In DC lore every real life city also exists like New York and Chicago, along with the cities that the heroes inhabit.

Metropolis is Delaware with a tinge of New York. Gotham is New Jersey with a dash of NYC Staten Island. And some Chicago in there because of Darkseid.

My sister said something about how gotham has to be new jersey, the sorta kinda englishy names, brick houses, and more importantly, the way the penguin goons talk in the arkham games/the various goofy goons in animation, oh also, the gotham household being a rich mansion sorta hidden above the city in the woods, jersey, to be fair just about everything that makes it jersey still makes it sound like new york but still

I know this isn't correct but in my head canon Metropolis was always Manhattan and Gotham was Brooklyn.
