Not only did I not take the ally npc's gun, but whenever I saw them carrying a pistol of some kind, I would always switch it with a better gun that I carried. I don't like seeing my allies carrying pistols.

Karen Traviss’ Kilo-Five Trilogy is a must read.
A Spartan-II, two ODSTs, a pilot, Black Box AI and their protege leader is on a mission to traffic covenant weaponry, fuel a rebellion amongst the Arbiter, all the while trying to acquire a covenant ship with glassing capabilities. There’s subtle humor in the trilogy which is a huge plus for lore understanding folks.
