For this prompt, let's take our inspiration from the beauty of nature. This is going to help you with having some imagery and marks that will flow a little more intuitively when you’re painting. So, step outside and gather some natural elements such as leaves, twigs, flowers, or even sand and pebbles. Feel the earth beneath your feet and the breeze on your skin as you connect with the elements around you and how it makes you feel.

Then, what I like to do is pick one piece and see how many ways I can interpret it. I typically aim for at least 10 different drawings or mark making lines. I’ll do this on a separate piece of paper or on my iPad even and I keep it in black-and-white. I remind myself that this isn’t for a finished work of art so it’s OK if the sketches look bad or don’t make sense and I don’t have to use them if I don’t like them. This takes the pressure off and I’ve found that my art turns out much better when I’m able to relax and be a bit more free when creating! Now, you can keep these sketches to the side as you paint, using them as little prompts for things to try out on your painting, but remind yourself that if you don’t like it, you can always cover over it - assuming you’re painting with acrylics! You also, could get some carbon paper and even transfer some of the sketches onto your painting once the first layer or two has dried. The idea is still to play and not get too attached to the outcome. Follow your curiosities and remind yourself, it’s just a painting. I know that sometimes this is easier said than done, though.
