The first time I accessed the special world in World 1, I was excited about trying to take on the âexpertâ level courses and chart a quick path to Bowser. Sadly, it didnât operate like Star road and every special world level is cut off from the main hub until you find the path from each world. Seems some of the best parts of the older games are being left out. That Super Mario World map was really fun to unlock all the secrets. This game was still really fun to 100%

I think it would be cooler if there was a secret path that led to a separate potential Bowser level which would lead to credits and a mark of completion, it would encourage people to check out both endings. Maybe even multiple, one secret path with a bunch of harder levels to lead to an easier Bowser level (since your skilled it takes less time and Bowser is less prepared) or there can be a longer shortcut with more levels but with less difficulty (but make it so Bowser is aware of that path, and it motivates him to prepare quicker, leading to a shorter bowser level but with more challenge and a harder final boss). The main path Bowser castle is medium difficulty for the Bowser castles but is longer in length and has the same final boss as the quicker shortcut.

Honestly, no. That made more sense back when games didn't have a save feature, such a SMB3. The warp whistle was quick way to get to your favorite world/levels, not just bowser.
Games don't need to cater to speed runners. I sort of feel like it defeats part of the challenge in speed running if you can skip most of the game. Longer speed runs become more like a marathon since there is no fast way to get to the end, at least not by design.

I remember playing mario bros on DS, and finding secret exits to unlock the cannons was always really cool IMO.
