English mastiff. Iâve owned many âguard dogâ type breeds growing up and no other breed even comes close to them, theyâre naturally protective yet one of the softest dogs youâll ever meet. Theyâre great with kids, low shedding, have a non existent prey drive and donât require much exercise. Only downsides are they slobber a lot, eat a lot and their poop is huge.
They donât need training to be guard dogs either as itâs been embedded in their instinct, if someone were walking towards you he would position his body in front of you basically blocking you from the person while he figures out if theyâre a threat or not. Their bark is loud, deep and powerful. They bite at a last resort.
Couldnât recommend them more as a family pet if you donât mind big dogs.

Great Pyrenees. They're livestock guardian dogs meaning they're intimidating as heck, are incredibly loud barkers and have the mass to back up the bark. Plus if you ever did get in a defensive situation I'm absolutely sure they would aid you. The main disadvantage is they are naturally distrusting of other canines that aren't a part of their pack/family so they aren't a good one to take to the dog park.
