Layed for over 45 years, my father was a mason too. When I first started I asked why he and others layed "backwards" at times. He was by-the-way an excellent mason. He said sometimes it was out of necessity but he also said that it was easier to hold bond because you're looking down the head joint. I was young and hadn't developed the true skill that comes with time and practice. But it's true, you can't get off bond or should I say shouldn't. And as ANY mason knows it's how you were taught. When you're first learning the journeyman is trying to get the "count" in so if he's coming from the left he's putting more units in the wall and the apprentice gets time on the wall and experience. Just a thought.
