Prayer isn't just asking for something you want, its a way to have a relationship with god, and since you want to use the example of a parent, why wouldn't you ask your parents for help, if your asking for something thats going to hurt you, they wont give you that thing your after but if your asking for something that is good for you, a loving parent would give you that thing/help you. Once again, prayer is a way to build a relationship with god, talk to him. And just because you didnt get what you want doesn't mean god wasn't listening, he gives s what we need, not what we desire
