Let’s talk about the “4-year experience” rule — and what most engineers get wrong.
There are two separate things:
🧠 Taking the PE Exam
📜 Getting Licensed as a PE
Here’s what you need to know:
✅ 20+ U.S. states (and growing) are decoupled, meaning they allow you to take the PE Exam right after passing the FE, without waiting 4 years.
📍 These include states like Texas, California, Florida, Michigan, New Jersey, and more.
🎯 What does this mean for you?
You can:
Pass the FE Exam
Keep the momentum and pass the PE Exam
Boost your resume, credibility, and interviews
Complete the experience later and apply for licensure
📌 The 4 years of verifiable engineering experience is still required for licensure — but not always a prerequisite to sit for the PE exam.
