Laenor is as dead as a doornail in the book. One of the Velaryon bastards rode his dragon Seasmoke into battle after he died. If he was still alive then no one could have ridden that dragon It's Impossible!
A dragon can only have one bonded rider at a time. George went out of his way to prove this in Fire and Blood when he had Joffrey Velaryon try to ride his mother's dragon Syrax.
The dragon threw him off and he died from the fall.
Therefore the fact that Alyn Velaryon rode Seasmoke proves definitively that Laenor Velaryon is well and truly dead in the books, probably murdered as stated.
Of course the show went with this nonsensical plot of Laenor running off to be gay in Essos because they have a pro-Black bias and they couldn't show their precious snowflakes Daemon and Rhaenyra engaging in murder.
I'm interested in how they would handle the Blood and Cheese Affair when Daemon orchestrated the murder of baby Prince Jaehaerys
10 to 1 says they'll find a way to exculpate the Blacks of any involvement in that baby murder
They will do anything and everything to paint Team Black in a good light.

The book left it up in the air. People just relayed what they heard or what they thought. Fire and Blood is written by a Maester who uses as his sources Septon Eustace who is relaying information second hand and the fool Mushroom who is unreliable and invents salacious gossip. No one knows for sure what actually happened, the show had to make choices as to what the facts are. But unless George himself definitively comes out and says something is true, there is no evidence that the show is wrong. Maybe Laenor also faked his death in the book , but Septon Eustace who is telling the story doesn't know that, because no one who was in on it wrote it down or told anyone.
