The emphasis is in the wrong place.
You donât NEED a red dot, especially not 10 yards and in. But to limit yourself just because âwell Iâll probably never use it outside 10 yardsâ is a dumb ideology.
Chances are your gun will only ever clear the holster on cleaning day and range day. Does that mean I shouldnât train? Does that mean I should carry an empty gun? Just because Iâm likely to never have to use it for its intended purpose?
The upsides of a red dot far outweighs the unlikelihood that itâll ever get use. You get a much finer aimpoint than ANY iron sights, which allows greater accuracy and you donât have to worry about sight alignment or focusing on the front post. Theyâre also much much faster for the human eye to pick up, and it allows you to remain target focused without blurring your sight picture.
Thatâs about like saying âwell Iâll never be outside at night so I guess I donât need a flashlightâ.

When I was a kid I thought the Millennium Falcon was so cool and I started shooting off to the side and I can't use sight properly, I get dizzy after a few shots, but I can hold out to the side a bit and trim twigs at 50 yards. I think the real lesson is what you learn as a kid can really stick with you in later skill development
