Pangaea: The Lost Supercontinent of Earth
Pangaea is known as a supercontinent that existed on Earth millions of years ago. It began forming around 335 million years ago during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras, and about 175 million years ago, tectonic movements caused it to break apart, laying the foundation for today’s continents.

Pangaea was surrounded by a vast ocean called "Panthalassa." In the center of the continent were expansive deserts because Pangaea was so large that rain clouds couldn’t reach its core. This made the inner regions extremely arid and desert-like.

The Pangaean period was also an era when giant reptiles and amphibians emerged. Large carnivorous creatures like Dimetrodon and Gorgonopsid dominated the land in Pangaea.

One of the strongest pieces of evidence supporting the existence of Pangaea is the discovery of the same types of fossils on different continents. For example, fossils of Mesosaurus found in both Africa and South America suggest that these continents were once joined.

The breakup of Pangaea led to the formation of modern continents. This process resulted in the creation of the Atlantic Ocean and eventually shaped the continents as we know them today. The separation is still ongoing; the African and South American continents are still slowly drifting apart.
