I “woke up” from my caesarean in excruciating pain but could not yet move. I struggled to move my mouth and eventually was able to cry out. I kept begging for water, could eventually move my head enough to see a nurse across the room. No response from her as I continued to moan and beg for water. Finally, after probably half an hour of pure torture, they gave me morphine. I believe the pain blocker and anesthesia wore off prematurely, and the only thing in effect was the paralyzer. I am certain I woke up mid surgery. The pain was so bad I didn’t even remember being pregnant. Now, every time I am put under, I have panic attacks. My body remembers.

Not on ketamine. What a game changer for an always depressed chronic pain patient. NO PAIN, NO DEPRESSION after a TKR. I was on top of the world, no pain after 20 plus years of pain, no depression after decades of clinical depression...amazing. Sadly, in backwoods Australia, ketamine is hard to get, especially in rural areas. No one should be in pain in the 21st century. Pity our law makers dont care

Omg for me it's uncontrollable shaking, to the point that my teeth won't stop chattering! I was so scared the first time it happened I thought something was wrong like some kind of infection and called the surgeon's office in a panic. They assured me it was just the anesthesia wearing off and were so kind about the explanation ❤️

What helps me when I wake up is to focus on wiggling and moving a little at a time. I usually wake up and immediately realize I’m in recovery, so I just start wiggling my toes, then try to move an arm.
I usually can remember right when I wake up, but then I have a period of time I can never recall before I’m fully lucid again. Not entirely sure, but I think the self assurance from wiggling that I do remember from when I first wake up probably chills me out enough. It’s funny how brains work.

It's the nausea I hate. My gastric restriction caused such rib pain waking up from endoscopy/robot surgery. But now total procolectomy on NHS is endoscopic and patients are walking next day! Took me days to just learn to move n lay without causing more pain.
#codeine dependency was hell and I hated having to take it just to stop the withdrawal. After 17 yrs Im on tramadol but only use when I can't cope on paracetamol alone. Oxygen is a fantastic pain reliever with no side effects.

Thank you for being the FIRST doctor to care to explain this. I've been put to sleep 14 times and no one has ever told me this... I always SOB when I wake up from anesthesia, so does Mom.
