....45 years ago a ground worker told me tape an off cut of 2x4 to a 6ft bubble and get going.
The old ways really are the best.

Just wait for the apprentice to use the level the wrong way.

Is James back on the tools or is this old footage?

Some of the best episodes of Skill Builder were the ones with James in.

1:40 for footpaths 1:80 for drainage. Save your fall for externals where you can. You never know who’s designed it…

I did the exact same thing to make a consistent gradient on my tiled patio. Note that you can adjust the position of the block to get the right gradient. You take the thickness of the block in cm and divide by the length in meters from the front of the level to the block and that is the gradient in percent.

Its called McQuires Rule.
The self cleansing velocity of a 4 inch pipe is 1 in 40. 1:40
A 6 inch pipe is 1 in 60. 1:60
And so on

I had to put in a 60m run a while ago, I have an old 1980s theodolite, set it up to the correct angle then just run along the pipe with a staff, if it's the same height on the reticle all along the run then it's bang on, no compound errors over distance.

How are these subtitles generated? I swear they are always wrong on YouTube shorts

We set a 1in40 fall yesterday using a 900mm level. Bubble at edge of the guide line seemed to give the correct fall.

Back fall is better than no fall 👍

I do by keeping the bubble just a little outside the lines😊

I think he’s wrong…?
That drain is internal to the building, that means it’s most likely a foul drain.
Foul drain is 80 to 1.
Storm drain 40 to 1
