When switching from a closed-hole to open-hole flute, you will definitely want to plug the open keys to start with. Here I teach you how to quickly and safely plug (and unplug an open-holed flute).
NOTE: This works on most open-hole flutes, but NOT MIYAZAWA FLUTES.
Using a silicone plug, lightly depress the key and gently push the plug into place. To remove, use something that is not sharp and will not scratch the flute (I used a cotton swab). Lightly depress the key again and gently press on the plug until it pops through. Tilt the body of the flute and be ready to catch the plug as it falls out.

It should be noted that you cannot do this on newer Miyazawa flutes (not sure about older or any other brands like this). With Miyazawa flutes, you push the plug in the same way, but in order to take it out, you have to use something that is able to pull the plug out as opposed to pushing it through. I’ve seen people use needles to pierce the plugs, and pull them upwards. I could not be so brave 😹😹😹😹
