if they had killed him at the beginning, more of sukunas fingers would be roaming around. He currently has 15 fingers, killing him now would be smarter than killing him with just one or two. The show can't go on without him or gojo so I'm curious what they plan on doing

I’m just gonna put it like this: if they killed Yuji, everyone is doomed. The disaster curses had like 10 of the fingers, and Kenjaku + Uraume found or already had all but 1 of the remaining Fingers after that. Sakuna doesn’t need Yuji to manifest, he just needs someone powerful enough to not instantly die. Now we have a fully manifested Sakuna, but we don’t have Yuji (who was instrumental in Sakuna’s defeat). And it’s not like Gojo is guarenteed to defeat Sakuna if he doesn’t have 10 Shadows; in a conflict of domains, fully manifested Sakuna will almost guaranteed win time and time again. They’ll probably still clash, but Sakuna can make hand signs to make it way easier on him while still being stronger than Gojo and matching him in speed like he already was. And then what does everyone else even have?
So there’s my fully Utilitarian reasoning for why it would have been stupid to kill Yuji with 1 or 2 fingers. There is an argument to kill him with 15, but that is still getting rid of a very powerful sorcerer when they are on borrowed time. also, Sakuna wouldn’t even have escaped containment if the elders hadn’t intentionally gotten Yuji killed.
Then there is just the simple moral truth that executing a teenager who was in the wrong place at the wrong time is morally wrong. If anything, the proper choice would be to keep him secluded away and feed him fingers as they come, and then discover that you can’t find any and get blindsided by whatever shit Kenjaku and the disaster curses do
