Brian please be careful and always think rationally. You claim you're prepared to use self defense, but claiming it and proving it in court are two different things. Self defense can sometimes be a gray area and many people who claimed it wound up going to prison for a very long time. I don't condone what people are doing but what I'm saying is be careful and don't make an irrational decision. I hope your holidays are safe and good luck in the new year.

Hey Brian. What are your plans for the holidays? If I were you, I would take a brief vacation from your job, and go out and visit your dad in Arizona. Your car may not be in the best shape, but it probably would still get you out to Arizona. It’s not that far of a drive from California.
Visiting your dad, who is part of your family, is the least that you could do. He has helped you, and has been there throughout your life, especially during your toughest times.
