Ever heard of using punctal plugs for dry eye disease? Punctal plugs help keep your natural tears on the surface of the eye and are a great option for some types of dry eye syndrome!
#dryeye #dryeyetreatment #doctoreyehealth

Punctal plugs are small eyelid plugs placed in the punctum, the small drainage hole located near the nose of each eyelid. There are puncta located on both the top and bottom eyelids near the nose.

The punctal plug procedure is very easy and all eye care professionals are trained and tested on this procedure. The procedure to place the punctal plugs usually only takes a few minutes. Oftentimes, eye doctors only place punctal plugs on the lower eyelids because that helps most people, but on occasion, and in my experience, people with autoimmune conditions such as Sjogrens syndrome may benefit from having the plugs placed on the top eyelids as well.

Types of punctal plugs: There are several punctal plug types. There is a temporary punctal plug made of collagen which often dissolves over a couple weeks (used as a trial). There is a semi-permanent synthetic punctal plug which can last up to 6 months and then there is a permanent punctal plug which is made of silicone. Umbrella punctal plugs are sometimes a name used to describe permanent punctal plugs because they appear like small umbrellas (depending on the design).

Punctal plugs risk and side effects: side effects are rare but there is always a risk of irritation or infection with placement of plugs. Thankfully, if there is ever a problem the plugs may be removed and antibiotics can be prescribed to manage an infection.

Once I found a dry eye routine that worked for me and I changed my diet to include lots of healthy veggies like dark leafy greens and fresh freshly sautéed and less if any sodas and junk food, AND FISH 3x/week, it didn’t matter as much what brand of eye drops, they all worked the same. 😊

I got these plugs in high school to help make my contacts more comfortable. After 4 years of having them, I started having scar tissue grow out of the ducts the plugs were put in. It was WILD and looked like a tiny little worm growing out of that little duct. It’s been almost 8 years since the scar tissue thing and thankfully haven’t had anymore

I thought I had dry eyes for about 15 years, since I first began wearing contact lenses, until my new optometrist suggested I try contact lenses with a different base curve (a flatter shape).
No more itchy, sore eyes, it was such a relief! Most contact lenses come in one, standard, base curve only. I wonder how many who never find out they’re actually not suffering from dry eyes, but from ill-fitting contact lenses.
Having said that, it’s great that there is efficient treatment for dry eyes 😊

I have these plugs and have had them for years now. They do work well and keep my eyes more moist then before. I do have to once in a while get drops for dry eye when I have a round of it maybe in the spring and fall or winter, but that’s it.
