The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk, known to the RAF and Commonwealth forces as the Tomahawk and later the Kittyhawk, was the very definition of a stalwart workhorse in the first half of the war. While its Allison V-1710 engine lacked an effective high-altitude supercharger, rendering it breathless in combat above 15,000 feet against the likes of the Messerschmitt Bf 109, it was a different beast at lower altitudes. Exceptionally rugged, heavily armed with six .50 caliber machine guns, and capable of absorbing significant punishment, the P-40 was a stable and deadly gun platform. It gained its most enduring fame with the American Volunteer Groupβthe "Flying Tigers"βin China, but it served with distinction on nearly every front, most notably with the Desert Air Force in North Africa. It was not the most glamorous fighter of the war, but with over 13,700 built, it was the right aircraft, in the right place, at the right time, and it tenaciously held the line in the hands of pilots who understood how to play to its strengths.
