Scrub into surgery with me!

Also yes, I am allowed to wear nail polish during surgery. Here is a really great paper on it if your curious:

The effect of nail characteristics on surface bacterial counts of surgical personnel before and after scrubbing by Hardy et al.

This study’s results showed that nail length, not nail polish, was the determining factor for bacterial quantities.

I didn’t know you had to sanitize so much! I guess people can count on vets to always wash their hands, huh?

Hey! I’m a young girl with the dream to become a large animal vet. I’m used to helping all the animals around the “farm” between giving horses shots and everything else! I just have to say I love your channel so much!

Imagine that back when doctors first started doing surgery, they did it with their bare hands, and didn’t even wash their hands first. No wonder so many died from infection. Just by implementing hand washing saved a lot of lives!

As a young girl in college to be a vet assistant this helps me so much so I can understand not only how different some clinics can be but also how to understand what the veterinary requires for surgery 😊

And people complain about wearing a mask for 20 minutes. Imagine doing this I could never do this, but they are doing so awesome if I’m not gonna lie.

I am so thankful for vets. My lil guy had to undergo patella surgery on his left hind leg about a year ago. It had come to the point that he couldn't keep it in place by shaking his leg like he'd got used to doing. We had a couple extremely scary events (he's allergic to some component in anaesthesia and he had an epileptic episode, so we had to reschedule surgery with a different anaesthetic just to be safe. I literally went to pick him up in fucking tears). It was SO scary, but I had full faith in the doc who was taking care of him. He's doing awesome nowadays. We still have to keep him from taking things too far (climbing a hill for too long) but other than that, he's like a whole new dog.

Been working at a vet for 16 years now and I love it. Now my vet is 76 years old and I bet the times were different but he does exactly what she does but doesn’t scrub as much as she does! He simply washes hands then does the rest. How the times have changed!

I did a bit of aseptic lab stuff and getting into lab took like 10 minutes every time but I quite liked this whole process 😂 when you successfully wear your gloves with no struggle is soooooo satisfying

I got to scrub into a few surgeries when I did work experience as an equine vet nurse. It was so exciting. We did an eye surgery, a colic surgery, and something else. It was one of the best experiences of my life all the patients recovered very well. I wish I was smarter and could become a vet. They let me actually help out. I got to winch the horse up on to the table. And did the suction for the colic. And I got to draw the blood for the plasma ointment we made for the eye surgery. The worst one I got to be a part of was a breach birth of a foal from my aunties stud that I worked at. The foal had to be dismantled inside the mare and removed piece by piece. I cried so much and realised I also don't have the heart for it.

I work as a kennel assistant in an animal ER hospital and surgery is always the most interesting room to clean lmao. Dogs swallow the most ridiculous things.

I'm always amazed at how for we've come. In the grand scheme of things, it wasn't THAT long ago where people were getting surgical procedures right on their dining table 😅

This is so interesting! I’m currently doing my associates degree but once I finish I plan to go to another school to be a vet! I love animals and have three dogs myself so I like doing what I can for them! My female dog I give her shots every month for her leg! Can’t wait to be a vet!

I'm a surgical core tech, I'm the one who pulls instruments and med surg for surgeries for a well-known clinic in Minnesota. I also do all the cleaning of all instruments after use. Maybe you could do a video of your surgical techs doing the set up and tear down of your surgical suite. It might fascinate people to see that part as well.
