Sixth Moment: Bishop of Cuba

As an Archbishop, Anthony devoted himself to missions and social justice in Cuba. He founded various religious and social institutions for both children and adults such as schools, orphanages, and savings banks. It was important for him to be present and accompany the people he served; he frequently visited the different communities by foot or by horse. Anthony actively fought against racial discrimination and injustice. He demonstrated equality by burning white and black paper, mixing the ashes, and proclaiming people's equal status before God. Despite facing numerous enemies, including assassination attempts, he continued his mission work. After six years in Cuba, Anthony was summoned to Madrid, where he served as President of the Royal Monastery.

The importance of presence and accompaniment cannot be overstated in our interactions with those we serve, our family members, and our endeavors. Being genuinely present and offering support, whether through a listening ear or a helping hand, fosters deeper connections and meaningful relationships. It is through our unwavering presence that we can truly make a positive impact on the lives of others.

Let us pray,
Loving and gracious God, may we be courageous to stand against racial discrimination and injustice, like St. Anthony Mary Claret. May we find strength in your unwavering love and grace to be able to work tirelessly to dismantle the barriers that divide us.
We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

St. Anthony Mary Claret, Pray for us.
