Anyone who thinks people who do dangerous jobs don’t care about their own lives is crazy. I am a certified arborist climbing bucket work tree felling crane work etc. and there is no safety personnel in any company who cares more about my life than me. Ego’s are a huge problem a production over safety mindset and complacency among other things that usually cause accidents. I will say though at least in my line of work there is no arborist osha guidelines so things are usually company enforced and one of the biggest problems I see is the need for the people in those positions to put their stamp on it like I’ve seen in my tenure from climbing up the tree without being tied in to 100% tie in from the base it doesn’t make sense like it was ok last week but not now huh weird. I’ve seen like crazy dumb ideas that didn’t pan out like driving with safety glasses on like when using a handsaw or chainsaw you must have cut proof gloves that aren’t cut proof the worst is when they take a tool away from you that in most people’s hands is perfect for the job but one idiot ruins it and the insurance companies and so on need to see a resolution for that issue which leads to more and more unnecessary safeguards. Like a top handle chainsaw is made to one hand and manage the limb with being able to control the saw safely but then someone cuts them selves so they say no one handing two hands at all times so if caught your fired(safety first rule) which takes away skilled workers who then can’t teach the beginners and the company’s final decision was to get rid of the top handle saw and gave us regular rear handle trim saws and guess what people continued to do yup you guessed it one hand a saw not designed to do that which makes for more safety issues. Slowly but surely it wears on you until your always looking over your shoulder worrying about pissing off a co worker and he snitches a safety guy spying with binoculars and so on until it’s no longer worth it. Tree work is hard work so being miserable or not enjoying it makes for complacency and more accidents because you’re not focused on the task at hand. Any safety worker who hasn’t done the job should never have a position over workers in the field. I used to have safety guys come out I used to climb like this I’d do that but we could back then…….and why can’t we now….what you better than me in your prime….hmmm I’d doubt that. The red tape and bullshit in America kills our workers that keep this place going. Safety guys are like liberals if they had their way they’d have a camera watching you 24/7 to make sure your doing it how they want it done.

Thank you! People need to hear this so they understand the history of things and gain some appreciation for the current protection of workers. When I was a kid it was common to see men missing limbs and appendages because they lost them on the job all the time with no recourse in previous generations.
