I can't get a formal diagnosis, but my daughter is diagnosed, her struggles are so similar to my own from childhood, and I I'm trying to accept that self-diagnosis is the best I get. My friends responded to me saying that I think I'm autistic with variations of, "Um, I know," "No duh," and similar. But online, instead of support, I've had to spend more time hearing about self-diagnosed people faking it, appropriating the term autistic, labelling themselves to be "cool," than finding folks who understand that I am self-diagnosed because the clinical evaluation is not accessible to me so I can't prove it, but I still struggle with the same things, find (some of) the same things helpful, need some of the same help coping with whatever my brain is doing, because for sure it isn't neurotypical, I just can't show papers.

Dialog is a very powerful thing. Especially for us, who can become lost in our own thoughts. And finally not having to come up with all the words for this life experience yourself. Because I have been making language to describe my state my entire life. I can finally find loan-words that mean something to me.

I subbed because she was sincere and I opened up in the comments. Now it's become exclusivity and ostracizes the community with a pay wall. Doesn't feel good and I can imagine how others in my situation feel about sharing in this group only to be left out. It's how we've all been treated by the typicals all our lives and now treated that same way by one of our own.

Before I got a diagnosis of autism, I was watching a lot of videos with people like you. I felt more and more confident that I am autistic. Thank you for being out there, helping all of us feel like “normal autistic” humans. 😊
