WAYS TO SLOW DOWN WITH KIDS ✨
I love the way Cal Newport describes slow living as "offering a slower, more sustainable alternative to modern busyness that draws on time tested wisdom."
Slow living is a movement born from food. It's about preserving and protecting what's beautifully human in an age of excess and efficiency.
One of the things I refuse to see industrialized is my children's childhood. Today I want to share some simple alternatives to the rat race of modern childhood.
🐌create tiny daily rituals. ie snuggling for a minute before starting breakfast or turning on nice music for a meal.
🐌watch sunrise or sunset together.
🐌be more lighthearted about getting out the door to things, despite our culture's one liners about success in life, being a few minutes late is not that serious. What is serious is how stressed we all are. its hard to be loving and hurried at the same time.
🐌lighting a candle for an ordinary activity and deciding to make it special.
🐌start a garden in a little patch of yard with good sun, order a seed packet, spend time each day tending them abd watching them grow.
🐌go for daily walks. such an easy way to balance the nervous system, reconnect and slow down.
🐌quit an extracurricular that makes your schedule more stressful.
🐌read a chapter book out loud. (we love the Growly series)
🐌make a list of your favorite childhood memories and recreate them.
🐌set up a stargazing night.
🐌take them fishing or foraging.
🐌start a handcraft together.
🐌declutter the toys by half (and half again!)
🐌allow emotions and acknowledge feelings rather than running around fixing everything for everyone.
🐌swap an organized sport for unstructured play outside with their friends.
🐌eat dinner together outside, play a board game, look for bugs and stars.
🐌watch the moonrise.
What are some ways you preserve and protect the lost art of childhood? I wanna hear them!
