many players have gone from Pitcher to position player or the other way around. What makes Ohtani so unusual is that he’s doing both at the same time, and doing both at an elite level.
The significance of doing both at the same time is that if you talk to pictures, they will tell you that for a couple of days after they pitch they can barely get out of bed. Their bodies are so sore
also between starts a starting pitcher, needs to do certain things to prepare for their next start. This is often happening, while players are taking batting and fielding practice
The significance of doing them at the same time is because of the toll on the body not because a bunch of talented athletes don’t have the capacity to learn a new position and switch over.
