As my uncle always said about the Mercedes he's owned, "It's a great car. Fast, comfy, nice ride, just gotta trade it in after year 3"

It is a great car to show off and feel luxurious but nothing you want to own for a long time.

I’ve never been to a bad Costco. I busy one yes, but not bad.

There are some gems in the 2000s era you can hold on to if you don't get the clapped out marketplace special for $3000. I mean hell, you yourself gave away a CL55 AMG. Those had the fantastic M113k that will go well into 400,000 miles if you do preventative maintenance.

I don’t get the Target/Costco analogy. Of all retailer those are among the best maintained. I’ve been going to the same Target for 20 years, and it’s only gotten better.

Daimler era had some gems. The ml320/350 w163 generation was great good motor comfortable and they’re dirt cheap on the used market. Typical electrical gremlins but nothing major. I’m on my second one with 200k only because I rolled the first one. At least they’re good in a crash.

Tons of great Benz models. My 2011 ML350 4matic just hit 190k! It's been rock solid this whole time

Mercedes, especially newer ones are frustrating because the depreciation makes them a spectacular bargain but if you get a moment behind the 8 ball on the little things that break, the repairs will snowball. And thats not even considering the items that are dealer coded or 200+ dealer hourly rates.

Ive seen cars of that era be running, driving, and have a repair quote that is either 9000 dollars to fix or 6000 for a replacement engine

Just get an 03-06 s55 or s600. Those you can buy and hold.

Those 278 Twin turbo V8s have severe cylinder scoring issues at any mileage above 70k . They’re fantastic to drive . But you need deep pockets . Very deep

W221 are good cars. Airmatic can become a problem. However, if you keep up with basic maintenance, they’ll serve you very well.

Yes. wonderful car. I would do the camshaft sensor and vvt actuator wiring harness fix kit to eliminate oil wicking to the DME engine computer. My buddy is a Master Tech and shop foreman for a major Mercedes dealer, he says beyond the oil wicking on the M278 engine, your typical W222 is actually a really reliable car. Just change your oil often and dont skimp on scheduled maintenance.

I looked at 2015+ Benzes with the new interiors when I totaled my 2012 Jaguar XJ recently. The problem is, these Benzes have 3G which was disabled in 2022. With any Mercedes before 2020, you can't use their mbrace system and app which is kind of a big deal. I went a totally different direction and got an EV6 GT. It has manual seats.

2000s era had some of the most reliable benzes ever. M112 and M113 engines with the 702.6 5-speed automatic transmissions were basically Honda/Toyota reliable

I see the vision though with Mr Barnes. It’s a S class that’s affordable to the working class and looks new to the untrained eye. Still super luxurious but you are right. You would get bent so bad on one of these if you weren’t doing repairs yourself and even then still proprietary and hard to get

You aren’t past the “Daimler Benz” era. You’re past the Daimler Chrysler era. A w222 S550 is a pretty decent car if maintained well like most European cars. M278 4.7 twin turbo has its flaws but it’s reasonably reliable and gets good fuel economy for what it is.
