So it seems to me that he decided to create an alter-ego that would be able to do what his default ego couldnā€™t. He invented and identified instead as someone that enjoys adversity, is obsessed with growth, hates weakness, takes great pride in being an above average human being, and is always pushing their limits. Joe Rogan calls it having a demon. A prideful, competitive ego whoā€™s a harsh and selfish savage that has a huge chip on its shoulder and wants to put itself through difficult challenges in order to prove to itself and others that it is not a worthless piece of shit anymore but is rather a supernatural force of nature thatā€™s capable of anything because it can effectively push through any sort of inner or outer obstacle/resistance with an unrelenting single-pointed grit and determination; fully embracing any and all pain and discomfort along the way in order to achieve their goals and or to go above and beyond what they thought was possible and break new grounds. I imagine that what you find in those moments of overwhelming adversity is that the thinking-mind eventually shuts off like a circuit breaker and can no longer maintain any thoughts because the body needs to conserve energy, and thus you begin to enter into the flow state with whatever it is that youā€™re doing, and in the flow state, you are egoless. No more mental drama is occurring in the mind to fuel any egoic/personal story. All that is then happening is pure thoughtless action. Then you suddenly realize that you can in fact still exist and even perform activity without thoughts; without simultaneously believing/telling yourself a personal story of who you are and what youā€™re doing; and itā€™s worth noting that nothing important/essential to your existence is lost in the process. You are still yourself without thoughts; in fact more so than ever before because youā€™re no longer trying to invent, project, and live according to some false self-image of who you are in your head. Without any thoughts, you are just an alive being, completely living in the present moment. So, effectively, my contention is that he is using his action and his inner demon/alter-ego in order to propel himself into an intense situation wherein the ego (Goggins)then dies from a lack of excess energy and as a result, he becomes enlightened; he realizes who or what he really is, namely, a presence as opposed to a person(self-image/story/thought). What I think is important to note, is that in that state of pure presence without thoughts, suffering goes away. Hence, Goggins is performing such intense activity but isnā€™t actually psychologically suffering from it. Many of us refrain from taking actions and undertaking daunting tasks out of the fear of suffering. However, Davidā€™s lifestyle seems to be showing that psychological suffering and intense activity donā€™t necessarily coincide. If one can remain present and distance themselves from their thoughts in the midst of their actions, they can remain unbothered during any activity. In theory, by employing this method, one can possibly increase their physical output by a tremendous factor. Wonder what your take on this is.
