Actually, this short it's right in some parts. Those holes are called "dentinal tubules", which they all have liquid inside, called "dentinal fluid", BTW, the end of these dentinal tubules is in the pulp of the tooth, which has many nerve endings and is extremely sensitive.
the pain experienced by many people ocours expecially when they eat or drink something cold or hot, this occours because de liquid inside the dentinal tubules it's expanding or contracting, due the change of temperature.
The enamel lost can't grow back, but you can place veneers to make the job of the anamel (which was lost), this can make the sensitivity go away or make it less sensitive
