It makes sense in that English stole words from dozens of languages, and because the way it was written changed fluidly for hundreds of years.
Basically, a scholar said 'I like this french word, adopt it 1:1.
Then another scholar said 'i like this french word, lets convert it to greco-roman standards'
Then another one said 'I like this french word, lets adopt it using olde latin standards.'
Eventually there are tens of thousands of words using hundreds of different spelling conventions, some mean practically the same thing, others mean different things but are spelled the same.
