I don't understand cases like this, but do know how they happen. All it takes is 'someone' saying something about another person & that information by this 'someone' is taken like gospel & the person accused is villified without any concrete evidence other than 'someone said.' This happened to me recently. Nothing like this scale, but ended up getting evicted from where I lived because 'someone' lied thru their teeth about me & what they fabricated I was doing. My denials fell on deaf ears. And, of course, the 'someone' could remain anonymous.

There are thousands of people in prison because 'the system' cannot admit the rampant internal corruption that is more interested in getting a case off the books than finding the real perpetrator!

I always remember a line from the TV series Law & Order where the DA says that he can indict a ham sandwich. Unfortunately, that is too true in real life.
