Maybe the amount of work needed to fix the game's performance ultimately led to the possibility that it can be made to run on last gen. The rumours were the engine being fundamentally broken so redeveloping parts of the engine is costly enough to need to recoup the mess somehow. Still, the install size of current gen consoles is small enough for this to make sense.

The problem with consoles is the lifespans they're given. I'm willing to bet PS4 and XB1 still has some horsepower left, I mean look at the Switch. It's severely outdated and yet they were able to port over PS4 and XB1 games with some compromises when they were supposed to be impossible. Plus at the end of every generations they have massive user bases and they're willing to abandon the consoles thereby wasting our money in the end.
There is a reason why PC gaming has been thriving, nothing is abandoned or wasted.
