In my head canon, it has always been that guard's last day on the job - like it would have been so funny if you found a letter on his body saying something like "Congrats on your last day! We'll all miss you, but best of luck with getting a small farm of your own/moving away with your new wife/retirement/taking care of your elderly parents in Bruma. I still think the unluckiest guy is the stormcloak who was too impatient for the execution. Literally alduin could have possibly saved the guy if he just let them do the ceremony and waited. Yes I know a lot of ppl died in that cutscene, but a chance to survive is better than volunteery death.

The funniest thing I ever saw involving that guard was if you have a bounty in Whiterun and try talking to him right before Odahviing grabs him he'll be like "Wait..I know y--" and get carried off while trying to arrest you π
