The Fantasy can be played as a gambit, where White gives up the d4 pawn but receives a big lead of development in return with some serious attacking potential. For this reason most Caro-Kann players refrain themselves from taking that free pawn.
It's not considered as one of the main answers against the Caro-Kann, and as such Caro-Kann players tend to not study this line in much depth. Not only that, but it also get them in a type of position they are not used to see. The Caro-Kann often leads to solid positions and long positional games. The Fantasy variation will force them into a tactical and aggressive position!
