My judo teacher randomly ranks us when he feels we earned it. Theres no set time

My father never made a big deal about it either. Even prompting to a new.belt he would have them step to the side and switch belts or just hand it to them as they left. Only black was done formally. I always preferred it.

I have a black belt in Karate and BJJ. Due to my moving around and deployments and such it took me a lot longer than normal to get both. With that said, I’ve always appreciated the objective nature of karate promotions more. There’s a panel of judges. Everyone testing starts from the basic stuff and goes until their level then step off the floor while those still going keep going. For black belt I was eventually the last one there and the whole ordeal took almost two hours. Nobody found out whether they got promoted or not until the very end. Sparring, kata, self defense examples and written test on history/Japanese language.

My tests(kenpo) we go through long hours of going through of our materials. As long as you survived through the tests and did give up. At the end we are on the floor, eyes closed catching our breathe and composure from the hard work then will get our new rank placed in front of us as we are at rest.

I learned in a traditional club, when it came to promotion you didn’t worry about it. When it happened it was usually at the end of class, and it was a bit of a ceremony. The instructor was making a statement that it was something special to reach a new level, not an “oh by the way”.

I was a blue belt in jujitsu for many years due to injuries and life pulling me away. After coming back and putting years in injuries started limiting my progression in my head. My name had been passed for promotion ceremonies and actually the thought of quitting was a thought due to my age and injuries needing surgery. One day in class I noticed the instructor eyeing me and asking me how long i been with him. At end of class, he called my name up to give me my purple belt. I couldn’t help but breakdown in tears. Meant so much more the be called up than be in a ceremony.

Karate at least in our schools are a mix of promotional ceremony for solid belt color promotions and pass out stripes during class.

In karate they sit us all down in a square around the mat according to rank. Then each group has their own demonstration of techniques. Then sparing. The number of people you have to spar is based on rank. Then people get belts and certificates signed and stamped by honbu dojo.

My sensei only promotes us when we ask. Then he usually sets up a schedule or a plan to get you promoted with a timetable as well.

It is crazy how pieces of tape carry such significance. But damn if I’m not excited for that one stripe on my Purple belt (BJJ) lol

Our judo class doesn't do stripes. When someone gets promoted, the class throws that person. After getting thrown at shodan promotion, black belts don't get thrown.

I'd like that. However, I think for kids, the ceremony helps drive home the achievement.
