NTA my step dad did the same thing. Destroyed my grandmaā€™s terrarium under the guise of ā€œhelpingā€. Turns out he poured bleach into it because he knew it was the last remaining thing my grandma had created. It wonā€™t stop at a plant it will only get worse. The fact that he calls you ā€œungratefulā€ for having your things destroyed and doesnā€™t at least say sorry says more about him than you think.

No she loved the terrarium and obviously spent a lot of time on it so he should know it doesnā€™t need water. If he spent any time getting to know her interests at all, he would know that when a terrarium needs water you lightly mist it.

All Iā€™m gonna say is yes, he wanted to be helpful, but if she didnā€™t leave him any instructions on it, he shouldnā€™t have touched it and if he did want to do something to it, he should have called and asked first. Now I donā€™t think it was worth canceling the trip over, but her being upset about it was rightful and his reaction to her being upset about him messing up something sentimental she has had for 15 years was not ok, he shouldnā€™t have touched it without permission and telling her she is overreacting and ā€œitā€™s just a plantā€ proves his ignorance because if he knew anything about terrariums, he would know that itā€™s an entire ecosystem with living organisms and not just plants. Clearly he has a lack of understanding of not only terrariums, but emotional attachment, sentiment and asking before touching someoneā€™s stuff, even if you are married

Justified. I fully understand the feeling. If i were in his situation id at least look on google first which would say you dont need to do anything often

Itā€™s not about the terrarium itā€™s about his lack of respect for something that was important to her, and that shows a lack of respect for her

Wonder if he would feel the same if he had and old bike or car that he loved and she ā€œhelpedā€ by pouring oil in the wrong spot or something. Or if he was a gamer, that she ā€œhelped himā€ clear out a full memory card by deleting his file or something. He would not forgive her.

If he allowed himself to feel anything but anger when things inconvenience him, he might feel regret, sorrow, compassion. Instead it's excuses and accusations. Today it's her plant. Tomorrow it's grandma's china. Maybe her wedding dress in the closet. But God forbid she put a dent in his car. I am jumping this way because he doesn't care that he's killed something she's carefully tended for more than a decade. If she did the same, he'd have a right to be upset--I don't care if it's a plant, his dog, or his Minecraft world, the things you care about should be respected.

Canceling anniversary plans seem to be a bit much. If my husband tried cleaning up my sewing area while I was away and accidentally ruined my machine or a project without even noticing something was wrong, I wouldn't not celebrate our anniversary because of it. BUT he would also be incredibly apologetic over it. My judgment would depend on: were things perfect and this is the first time he's done something like this, or is he always this careless and invalidates her feelings. It's impossible to know someone's character and intentions from one isolated incident.

I agree she overreacted. The husband should have been more sympathetic though.

He tried to be nice/helpful, and instead of being forgiving, she's being vindictive.
