Seriously though… the amount of ingenuity and creative problem solving that’s come from the homestead movement the last handful of years is incredible.

Mixing the old with the new— it’s the most powerful part of this remixed old-fashioned life. 💗

You are so correct. Our Grandparents learned from their parents and grandparents, taught their daughters and sons who added and so on and so on. I think since the personal computer became common the information has become incredibly accessible.

I had a dream once where I was helping build a giant stone and wood city wall, with the statement ‘Leveraging modern knowledge against ancient materials’.
And that has stuck with me for ages. There is so much new that we know about how things work, I think we can do amazing things with the same materials our ancestors used.

This is my big focus in my quest to go back to my roots, as they say...learn how they did things, take the skills i want to learn, and use them here in 2024. I think thats what "legacy" is, carrying skills from one generation to the next and modernizing them.

For example, I love making Spaetzle. Most people probably didn't have any special tools to make it back then, but now we have spaetzle makers.

The biggest difference between my grandmothers' day (born about 1885) and today is the dissemination of the information we learn and share, particularly with the advent of the Internet.
Growing up on a farm in the 60's, my family fermented sauerkraut, made both vinegar and fermented pickled vegetables, canned meats, vegetables & fruits, made preserves, jams and jellies, kept a sourdough starter for over 20 years, baked, made apple ciders, raised bees & harvested honey, husbanded pigs, cattle, the odd goat, chickens and guinea fowl, dried, cured, smoked and pickled meat, all to keep ourselves and our neighbors fed. We shared skills and foodstuffs within about a 12 farm group but everyone still experimented with their own variations. Today I can see a "pickled salad" recipe from Russia on my phone and reverse engineer the recipe to work with the 5% vinegar I can get easily from the 30% Russian housewives use. Knowledge is power and the basis for knowledge, information, is at our fingertips, waiting to be put into use and converted into knowledge.
