In his final moments he was concerned about the pitcher and his wife

Apparently Mays was throwing spitballs. The ball was so dirty Chapman never saw the ball. Umpires were required to change dirty balls for new ones and the spitball was outlawed. So sad a man had to lose his life for changes to be made in the rules.

“The Pitch that Killed” by Mike Sowell is my all-time favorite baseball book.

Life is sadly one tragic event for someone every minute of every day. We are so fragile and live barely a bredth of time. We should all live each day as if it's our last. We could all be a little kinder to one another and maybe even more open hearted to each other, because you never truly know when your time card gets punched out. Wishing all good things to everyone around the planet. ❤

Tragic. Am curious what happened to their child. Hopefully, raised by family members that loved him/her. 💔

So tragic. Nobody's fault, just an unfortunate accident. The ripple effect of Mrs. Chapman's suicide, and the child being orphaned. So very sad.

the creation of the batting helmet…so obviously needful…hard to imagine our modern era baseball without it.

Some sources say that Chapman, one of the best shortstops in the game, was going to quit after the season. Katie's father was wealthy and was going to set Ray up in business. And there was a petition a few years earlier to get Carl Mays blacklisted from baseball. He was a notorious headhunter.

I pitched in Little League, jr high, and high school and I cannot imagine hitting a batter and not knowing about it until seeing the ump waving for a doctor.
Not saying this didn't happen but there's clearly more to it than what we learned here.
