The results of this cabinet paint test are in!

These are laminate cabinets, which means they’ve been laminated with their outside layer. Sometimes you can even see a seam where this was done. It’s common on pre-made cabinets and box assembly furniture. It’s one of the glossiest surfaces, so what works on this will work on many other cases.

The Latex paint is Sherwin Williams ProMar 200. The Acrylic Enamel is Behr Cabinet & Trim Enamel. Lastly, the one I’m going with is Behr’s Urethane Alkyd Enamel. This type of enamel has a longer dry time, but a slightly harder finish!

For sandpaper I used 220 grit. For the primer I initially tried Kilz 2, but it beaded off completely. I ended up using Oil-Based low odor Kilz.

Remember primer has two jobs, to help paint adhere and to seal the surface blocking stains from underneath. The Urethane Alkyd advertises that primer isn’t needed for adhesion (just on bare wood for stain blocking properties). I have a pre-finished, sealed surface, so I won’t be using any, since I got the same results for sanding with and without using primer. This will save several steps!
