I have a little different perspective .. it is the sacrifice of ego that allows a person to be led in obedience - but ego never stays quiet for long .. shoot, folks get proud of their obedience, too!
Serve out of love, though .. and the ego doesn't get fed - so, the sacrifice doesn't become self serving.
Another approach is to consider all things the property of the creator, and that we are merely caretakers - parable of talents for reference, Jesus was smart - and so, as caretakers, we can engage our faculties to determine if a particular gift might well serve the Kingdom that we are a part of.
Sometimes, things just show up .. and I figure it is because the person that they are intended for hasn't arrived yet. In the case of the prickly ash seeds that the birds have been dropping off, it was a case of something that I didn't even know that I wanted .. but that's the way the Kingdom works 😁
