For me it's just a reason to get out of the house. I work from home so I try to use my hobbies as an excuse to get out as much as possible and portable operating comes with a different set of challenges

Portable at 1500 feet near home…..Contesting, satellite operating, rag chewing 100+miles on 2FM. Great scenery, fresh air, meeting walkers (and even parasenders!) who come by to say hello….

#1 Good excuse to get out of the house. #2 With radios like the Mountain Topper, Elecraft KX?, Or any of the other highly portable QRP rigs, anywhere you can legally set up can be your QTH for that time. #3 Even a city park can have less interference than your typical home surroundings; get out farther away and reception improves.

Reason #2 for sure, it's a huge difference when portable away from an urban area. As for Reason #4, bring extra beer for guests!
