If i remember correctly i think I read somewhere that birds chew molted feathers because it helps dry out their beak and covers it in feather powder/dust which is used to coat the rest of the feathers on their body to stay as dry as possible when it rains so that they aren’t dragged by the water weight. When a bird Powders/oils up their beak by chewing up a feather, its kinda like humans lathering soap on their hands, but instead its a parrot getting ready to clean stuff off their feathers. I have a green cheeck conure that uses a “preen feather (gland)” for something similar, but i know cockatiels have a powdery keratin substance instead
