wow, being unemployed isn't unfortunate enough it's breaking the law, too. Gamers are truly oppressed in the late 19th century

When my yiayia and papou (Greek for grandma and grandpa) came to the US from Greece after WWII they lived in a Company mining town. They had 9 kids and lived in a 2 bedroom house that did not have an indoor bathroom. My grandfather was paid in scripts.

Hey, this system of renting "prisoners" and let them work hard and dangerous job, was also quit popular in Germany for a few years.

Please look into the modern prison system. It’s not much better (maybe alittle more “equal”). Prisoners are charged $ at every stage of the process.

Thank you for this nuanced take, especially the ending. Most of the time when you hear something was "worse than slavery," it's in the context of "slavery wasn't that bad, whites had it worse." It's an argument often made in bad faith to shut down conversations about race.

This is literally the worst version ever of switching from a one time payment to a subscription model.

sometimes a few restrictions on a person's "freedom" can lead to a MORE free society.

the freedoms to harm, oppress, or put others at risk, are not freedoms worth protecting.

eg, banning murder takes away your freedom to murder. but it means you then have the reasonable expectation of being free FROM being murdered.

the difference between positive and negative freedom is not something many libertarians seem to understand.

Something similar happened after the abolition of slavery in South Africa in 1838. A vagrancy law was passed and employment contracts became really strict in favour of employers. All to lock former slaves into performing the same labour they did before for the same abusive bosses.

I live in Louisiana where slavery, on our books, as written as still legal. The rationale for this is our prisoners are not paid to work. Someone wrote a bill to change it, but by the time it was to come up for a vote, he asked that it not be passed as it would mess up the free labor of prisons. ““Louisiana's current constitution allows slavery and indentured servitude as punishment for a crime.” Nov, 2022

The fact that all those unemployed people wouldn’t have been unemployed if the mines employed them right away, rather than making them slaves.

If anyone want to learn more about this the national civil rights museum in Birmingham, Al does an excellent job at detailing the history of American race discrimination.
