Where Did SBF Get $250 MILLION To Pay Bail? - How Money Works #shorts

Sam bankman Fried was released earlier this month after posting 250 billion dollars in bail ahead of his time in court, 250 million dollars makes this the largest pretrial court bond in history.

But where did this now bankrupt fraudster get that kind of money from?

SBF claimed in an interview that he only had $100,000 and a single working credit card left to his name. The answer is that Bankman Fried did NOT pay this bond with cash his parents used their Palo Alto property as collateral instead, if he doesnā€™t show up to court, the feds can take their home.

But that doesnā€™t mean that Samā€™s parents have a house worth 250 million, their house is only worth about 4 million dollars. SBF got away with an agreement that says that he and his parents will be liable for the remaining 246 million if he tries to flee.

A lot of people are angry at this because SBF is bankrupt either way, bankrupting him 250 times over is not as scary as the potential for life in prison.

This is insane. If a regular person got a 10k bail they couldn't just say "look, you can take my 2k car as collateral and if I skip town, you can come after me for the rest". It undermines the entire point of having bail, which is that you surrender money to the court up front to discourage going on the run.

So basically the bond was 4M, not 250M. What an odd decision for the court to make.

Moral of the story? You can get away with anything by having money.....

Rich people get so many advantages by buying off a judge with campaign money

Points to note: if your grown-ass kid commits federal crimes and asks you to pony up your house for bail, honestly, you are within your rights to reply with ā€œwrong numberā€ and hang up immediately. Thereā€™s a limit.

How is this justice? Brother in Christ, this man is putting his parents on the line for his crimes. Meanwhile he is breathing easy after scamming countless people off their wealth.

North Korea has a 3 generations rule. The U.S. has a 2 generations rule it would seem.

The American 'justice' system is so fond of cash bail it seems you just need to promise a lot of cash not even have it. Fundamentally it is an expensive system because it means lots of poor people are kept in expensive jail cells.

Bail isnā€™t a sign of guilt. Itā€™s important we understand the justice system and how it works.

Nah it's more like if they said your bail is 10k and you gave them your old Xbox with like 3 games. If the bail was set at 10k, the amount they paid would equal $160 relative to the total amount. That's such an obscenely small amount, none of us regulars could get away with it.
